XAUUSD pip value calculator

What one pip of XAUUSD is actually worth at your lot size. Gold pip value trips up almost everyone arriving from FX pairs, so this shows both conventions in use rather than picking one and being wrong for half of you.

$0.10
Per pip ($0.01 move)
$10.00
Per $1.00 of gold movement
$760.00
Per $76 move — the median gold day

0.10 lots controls 10 troy ounces. That last column is the one worth sitting with. We measured the median daily range on XAUUSD at $76 across a year of five-minute bars, so at this size an ordinary day is worth $760.00 in either direction — and the ninetieth percentile day was more than double that. People size gold like an FX pair and are then surprised by the swing. See the data →

Assumes the standard 100 troy ounce contract. “Pip” on gold is ambiguous — brokers quoting to two decimals treat $0.01 as a pip, while many traders mean a whole $1.00 move. Both are shown so you can use whichever your broker means.

Common questions

How much is 0.01 lots of gold worth per pip?

On the standard 100-ounce contract, 0.01 lots is one troy ounce — so a $1.00 move in gold is $1.00, and a $0.01 move is one cent. If your broker calls $0.01 a pip, one pip on 0.01 lots is $0.01. This is the smallest position most brokers allow, and it is why accounts under roughly $700 cannot express a percentage risk properly: the minimum trade is already larger than the intended risk.

What is the pip value of XAUUSD?

It depends which convention your broker uses. On the standard 100 troy ounce contract a $1.00 move in gold is $100 per 1.00 lot, $10 per 0.10 lot and $1 per 0.01 lot. If your broker quotes gold to two decimals and calls $0.01 a pip, then one pip is $1 per lot. Both readings are shown above so you can match whichever your platform means.

Why is gold pip value so confusing?

Because gold is not quoted like a currency pair and the word pip was borrowed rather than defined. On EURUSD a pip is unambiguous. On XAUUSD some brokers quote two decimals and call the last one a pip, some quote three, and plenty of traders describe a whole $1 move as a pip. The safest habit is to think in dollars of price movement, which is what our other calculators and the bot itself use.

How much is one lot of gold worth?

One standard lot is 100 troy ounces. At a gold price around $4,000 that is roughly $400,000 of notional exposure, which is why position sizing matters far more on gold than the small lot numbers make it look.

How does pip value affect position size?

Directly. Position size is just your risk divided by what the stop distance costs at that size, so once you know what a $1 move is worth on your lot size you can work out any stop. Our lot size calculator does that arithmetic and also warns you when the broker minimum has forced your real risk above what you configured.
