Gold trading hours in your timezone
Most answers to this question are written in broker server time, which is useful to almost nobody. This converts the measured hourly profile into your local clock — and the ranking comes from 70,546 five-minute bars rather than from somebody's memory of when London opens.
Most active hours, your local time
13:00–14:00 · 12:00–13:00 · 14:00–15:00
Median five-minute range of $6.97 in the busiest hour, against $2.96 in the quietest — a 2.4× difference across the day.
Volatility is not opportunity. A high-range hour gives a strategy room to work and can also stop it out faster. These are the hours where gold moves most, which is not the same as the hours where any particular system makes money. The two dimmed bars are the daily maintenance break, where the archive has reduced coverage and the hours are not comparable like-for-like.
Measured from 70,546 five-minute bars across 312 sessions, Aug 2025 – Jul 2026, on one raw-spread MetaTrader 5 feed. Server clock UTC+3; if your broker differs, shift accordingly. The full dataset is published.
What the profile actually shows
Gold is not one market across the day. Median five-minute range runs from about $2.86 in the quietest full-coverage hour to $6.97 in the busiest — roughly a 2.4× spread. A strategy measured across all hours is being measured on several different markets averaged together.
What does not vary is cost. Median spread is $0.16 in every one of the 24 hours, and it exceeded $1.00 in three bars out of 70,546. So the cost of trading as a share of the move is driven almost entirely by the denominator — which is the practical reason the quiet hours are expensive and the busy ones are not.

Common questions
What is the best time to trade gold in South Africa?
South Africa is UTC+2. Gold's highest measured volatility falls in the afternoon and early evening SAST, covering the London–New York overlap. The tool above converts the full measured profile to your exact timezone rather than giving a single answer, because the useful question is which hours are active for you, not which are active for a trader somewhere else.
What is the best time to trade gold in India?
India is UTC+5:30, so the most active gold hours land in the evening IST. Select Mumbai / Delhi above to see the full profile in local time. The ranking of hours is identical everywhere — only the clock changes — because it is a property of the market, not of your location.
Are these hours the same on every broker?
The underlying market hours are, but the numbers on your MetaTrader chart are not. Server clocks differ by broker, commonly UTC+2 or UTC+3, and they shift with daylight saving. This tool assumes a UTC+3 server, which is what the source archive was recorded on. If your broker differs, shift the hours accordingly.
Does trading the most volatile hour make more money?
Not necessarily, and it is worth being clear about that. High volatility gives a strategy room to work and also stops it out faster. These are the hours where gold moves most, which is not the same as the hours where any particular system is profitable. What the data does support is that a strategy measured across all hours is being measured on several different markets averaged together.
Where does this data come from?
Our own archive: 70,546 five-minute XAUUSD bars across 312 sessions, August 2025 to July 2026, from one raw-spread MetaTrader 5 feed. It is published in full under CC BY 4.0 along with the script that reproduces it, so every figure here can be checked rather than taken on trust.
