Position closed unexpectedly in MT5

SYMPTOM

A position closed on its own, and not at the stop loss level.

Causes, most likely first

1. It was a stop out, not a stop loss

When free margin falls below the broker's stop out level, positions are force-closed regardless of your stop. The deal comment usually says so. This is a margin event, not a strategy event — see stop out.

2. The stop filled away from its level

A stop is an instruction to close at market once touched, not a guarantee of price. Through a gap or a fast release it fills wherever liquidity exists, which can be materially worse. Across a weekend gap there is no price in between at all — see gold trading hours.

3. The broker closed it

Positions can be closed by the broker at expiry on some instruments, on account restriction, or during a corporate or contract event. The comment on the closing deal is the record.

4. The EA closed it under a rule you forgot

A daily loss lockdown, a session cutoff or a news shield can close or block positions on schedule. Ours halts for the server day once the daily limit is reached — see bot stopped after daily limit.

Why this happens

The History tab settles it. Open the closing deal and read the comment — "so" or "stop out" for a margin close, "sl" for a stop loss, and a broker note for anything else. That single field distinguishes causes that otherwise look identical.

The distinction matters because the fixes are opposite. A stop out means the position was too large for the account, so size down. A stop filling away from its level means the stop was too tight for the instrument, so widen it and size down to compensate.
