REVIEW

Is MetaTrader 5 safe? An honest review

The platform is not where the risk is. MetaTrader 5 is mature, widely audited software — what you connect it to and what you install into it are the parts worth checking.

Short answer

Yes, as software. MetaTrader 5 is developed by MetaQuotes, has been in wide use since 2010 and is the standard retail platform. The genuine risks are the broker holding your money and any expert advisor you install, which runs with full authority to place trades on your account.

The platform is the least risky part

MetaTrader 5 is a terminal, not a broker. It displays prices, sends orders and runs programs. It never holds your money — that sits with the broker, and the platform is simply how you talk to them.

It has been in wide release since 2010 from an established developer, and is the default retail platform across a large part of the industry. As software, it is not where your risk is.

What MT5 is genuinely good at

  • The strategy tester. Multi-threaded and multi-currency, it lets you evaluate an EA over years of data in minutes. This alone justifies MT5 over MT4 for anyone automating.
  • Order types. A fuller set than MT4, including stop-limits.
  • Timeframes. Twenty-one against nine, which matters for multi-timeframe strategies.
  • It is still developed. Security and compatibility updates continue to arrive.

What it is not good at

  • Charting polish. TradingView is nicer to look at and easier to annotate.
  • Mobile automation. The mobile app cannot run EAs. Nothing can — automation needs the desktop terminal running, which is why a VPS exists.
  • Getting out of your way. The interface is dense and dated, and the learning curve is real.

That mobile limitation catches almost every newcomer, and it is a property of the platform rather than of any product built on it. We cover the practical consequences under what to know before your first bot.

A sensible first hour

Install from your broker, open a demo account, and place a few manual trades to learn the order ticket. Then open the strategy tester and run something — even a built-in sample — to see what the reports look like. That hour makes every later decision easier, and the tools are covered under testing without risk.

If you are choosing between platforms first, MT4 versus MT5 settles it. If you are in the United States, which brokers are available to you is the more urgent question.

If you are installing MT5 in order to automate something, what an MT5 trading bot actually does once installed covers the part that comes after the download.

Common questions

Is MetaTrader 5 a legitimate platform?

Yes. It is developed by MetaQuotes, released in 2010, and used by a very large share of retail forex and CFD brokers worldwide. It is a mature trading terminal rather than a broker — it holds no money and takes no position. Download it from your broker or from MetaQuotes directly rather than a third-party mirror, and the software itself is not a meaningful risk.

Can MetaTrader 5 steal my money?

The platform cannot — it has no access to funds, which sit with your broker. Two adjacent risks are real. An unregulated broker can refuse withdrawals, and that has nothing to do with MetaTrader. And an expert advisor you install runs with authority to place trades on your account, so a badly written or malicious one can lose money quickly. Check the broker’s regulator, and demo any EA before it touches a funded account.

Is MetaTrader 5 better than MetaTrader 4?

For new users, yes. A far better strategy tester, more timeframes and order types, and it is the version MetaQuotes actually develops — MT4 has had no meaningful feature work in years. The one advantage MT4 retains is a much larger library of existing EAs and indicators, from a fifteen-year head start. The full comparison is on our MT4 versus MT5 page.
