MT5 password reset: forgotten or changing it

SYMPTOM

You have forgotten the MT5 password, or want to change it and cannot find where.

Causes, most likely first

1. You forgot the password to a broker account

Reset it in the broker client portal, not in MetaTrader. The terminal is only a client — your credentials belong to the broker, MetaQuotes never holds them, and there is no "forgot password" inside MT5 for a live account. Log in to the broker website, find the account, and use its reset or change-password function; the new password works in the terminal immediately.

2. You know the password and want to change it

The broker portal is the reliable route here too. Some MT5 builds still offer an in-terminal change — right-click the account under Navigator and look for "Change password" — but brokers increasingly disable it in favour of the portal, so its absence is not a fault.

3. You are resetting the wrong one of the two passwords

Every MT5 account has a master password (full access) and an investor password (read-only). Resetting the investor password does not change the master, and logging in with the investor one connects successfully but cannot trade — which reads like a different fault entirely. See trade disabled.

4. It is a demo account

Demo credentials are often not recoverable at all — many brokers provide no reset for them. The practical fix is to open a new demo, which takes a minute. If the demo was archived for inactivity the login fails identically to a wrong password; see authorization failed.

Why this happens

The design surprises people because every other app owns its own passwords. MetaTrader is closer to an email client: the terminal displays the account, the broker owns it, and credential changes happen where the account lives.

After a reset, saved logins on other machines and VPS instances keep trying the old password. Update them promptly — repeated failed attempts can temporarily lock the account on some brokers, which turns one problem into two.

Common questions

Can I reset an MT5 password from inside the terminal?

For most brokers, no. A forgotten password is reset in the broker client portal. Some builds allow changing a known password from the Navigator account context menu, but brokers increasingly route everything through the portal.
