Best platform to trade gold: what actually matters
There are four ways to trade gold and they suit different people. Once you have chosen, the thing that decides your cost is not the platform brand — it is the spread, and we measured it.
Short answer
Spot gold (XAUUSD) on MetaTrader through a raw-spread broker suits short-term and automated trading. Gold futures suit larger accounts and US traders. ETFs suit long-term exposure with no leverage. Physical gold is not trading. For anything automated, account type matters more than platform brand.
Four ways to trade gold
| Method | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Spot XAUUSD (CFD) | Short-term, automated, smaller accounts | Spread, and overnight financing |
| Gold futures | Larger accounts, US traders | Contract size and rollover |
| Gold ETFs | Long-term exposure, no leverage | Not designed for short-term trading |
| Physical gold | Storing value | Not trading — spreads and storage make it unsuitable |
For anything automated the answer is almost always spot XAUUSD on MetaTrader, because that is where expert advisors run and where position sizes can be small enough for risk-based sizing to work.
Why spread decides more than the platform brand
Gold moves a lot, which makes people assume cost is irrelevant. For short-term strategies the opposite is true — the cost is paid against the size of the move you are trying to capture, not against the size of the daily range.
This is why our own bot enforces a spread ceiling and simply declines signals when the spread is too wide. On a standard account it refuses a large share of otherwise valid trades, which looks like a broken bot and is actually the filter doing its job.
What to check in a gold trading account
- Account type. Raw spread or ECN rather than standard, for anything short-term.
- The symbol name. Brokers suffix instruments differently — XAUUSD, XAUUSDm, GOLD. An EA hardcoded to the wrong one sits idle and reports nothing.
- Swap rates, if you hold overnight. On gold these can be substantial.
- Weekend handling. Gold gaps over the weekend — we measured a median gap of $7.60 across 52 weekends, with 48% exceeding $10, which is more than many people set as a stop.
- Regulation, before anything else. A tight spread at a broker that will not pay you out is not a bargain.
If you are in the United States
Spot XAUUSD through offshore brokers is generally unavailable to US retail clients, so the practical options are futures, ETFs, or a prop firm funded account. Which applies to you is set out under MT5 brokers for US traders, and the funded-account route has its own rules — chiefly trailing drawdown, which we measured against real gold movement.
For what it is worth, our own engine is built for Exness ECN execution on XAUUSDm — which is a statement about order handling and spread rather than a recommendation of a broker. The reasoning for that choice is on the page.
Common questions
What is the best way to trade gold?
It depends on your horizon. For short-term or automated trading, spot XAUUSD on MetaTrader with a raw-spread or ECN account, because the cost per trade is what determines whether a short-term edge survives. For position trading with larger capital, futures offer tighter effective costs and central clearing. For long-term exposure without leverage, an ETF is simpler and cheaper than either.
Where can I trade gold in the US?
US residents can trade gold futures through a CFTC-registered futures broker, or gold ETFs through any ordinary stock brokerage. Spot XAUUSD as offered by offshore forex brokers is generally not available to US retail clients, because those brokers do not register with the CFTC. This is why US traders wanting automated spot gold strategies commonly use prop firm funded accounts instead.
Does the spread matter much for gold?
More than most people expect, and it is the reason account type outranks platform choice. We measured a year of XAUUSD data and found median spread was $0.16 while the median five-minute range was a few dollars, so the cost of trading is a meaningful fraction of the typical short-term move. On a wide-spread standard account, a strategy that is right about direction can still lose money.
