How much is a silver bar worth? Every size, priced, and how much it moves
A silver bar is worth its weight in troy ounces times the silver price. The harder part is what that number does next: silver moved twice as much as gold in the last year, and it lost almost half its value in the eight months after its January 2026 record. Below: every common bar size, what it weighs, and how many dollars it swings.

How heavy silver is for the money
On 29 September 2026 an ounce of gold bought 68.4 ounces of silver, so the same money in silver weighs 68.4 times as much. $10,000 of silver was 164.3 troy ounces, about 11.27 pounds; in gold it was 2.4 ounces, less than a fifth of a pound. $100,000 of silver weighs about 113 pounds, which matters for where you keep it and what a vault charges.
The bar banks and exchanges trade is the London Good Delivery bar. Bars made since 1 January 2025 must hold 1,000 troy ounces, give or take 10% (61.7 to 75.4 pounds), at least 99.9% silver, and measure roughly 300 by 130 mm on top and 80 mm high; bars of 750 to 1,100 ounces made earlier are still accepted. A 1,000 oz bar weighs about 68.6 pounds.
How much a silver bar’s value moves in a day
Over the last 252 London prices, to 29 September 2026, the typical move from one day to the next was 2.05%, and 1 day in 20 it was 7.3% or more. Since 1968 the typical move was 0.95%. Gold’s typical move over the same last year was 1.00%.

And over a year
Across all 14,584 one-year stretches since 1968, silver was lower at the end than at the start 48.3% of the time, lost 10% or more 28.6% of the time, 20% or more 13.1% and 30% or more 5.3%. The worst year began on 18 January 1980 and took 70% off. For gold since 1971 the same figures are 38.6%, 16.3% and 5.6% for the first three: a silver bar lost a fifth of its value in a year more than twice as often as a gold bar.

Every year and every crash is in silver price history, and whether buying silver in any month since 1971 paid off in is silver a good investment?
Before you buy or sell a bar
- Get both prices. Ask a dealer what it charges for the bar and what it would pay for the same bar back. The gap is your round-trip cost; it is wider per ounce on small bars. We did not measure premiums.
- Size it for the bad day. On the table above, a 100 oz bar moved $444 or more on 1 day in 20 over the last year.
- Plan the storage. At silver’s price, value takes weight and space: 113 pounds per $100,000.
- Count the tax. The IRS treats silver bullion as a collectible: a gain held for more than a year is taxed at up to 28%.
Old US silver coins are priced the same way in how much is a silver dollar worth?, and gold bars in how much is a gold bar worth? This page is a measurement, not a forecast or personal advice.
How we measured it
Price: the LBMA Silver Price in US dollars, every fix from January 1968 to 29 September 2026 (a wrongly dated Saturday row in February 1983 dropped). On 5 October 2026 the LBMA price feed refused our scripted request, so the latest price is 29 September 2026, not today. Gold comparison: the LBMA Gold Price PM from August 1971, measured the same way. Units: NIST Handbook 44. Bar standard: LBMA Good Delivery Rules, silver technical specifications. Values are for the silver content only, without premiums, storage or tax.
