How much is sterling silver worth? Silverware priced by the ounce, gram and pound

Most people weigh a drawer of silverware on a kitchen scale, in ordinary pounds and ounces. Silver is priced in troy ounces, which are heavier, and sterling is not pure silver. This page does both conversions, says what a sterling mark legally guarantees, and shows what a pound of sterling has been worth since 1968.

The kitchen-scale trap

A troy ounce, the unit silver is priced in, is 31.10 grams. The ounce on a kitchen or postal scale is 28.35 grams, so one troy ounce reads about 1.0971 ounces on it, and a kitchen pound holds 14.5833 troy ounces, not 16. Multiplying a kitchen-scale weight by the silver price per ounce overstates the metal by about 10%; then sterling is only 92.5% silver. Together, a pound of sterling on a kitchen scale held $821.04 of silver on 29 September 2026, not the $973.84 that 16 × the silver price suggests.

Common questions

How much is sterling silver worth per ounce?

$56.30 per troy ounce at the London silver price of $60.87 on 29 September 2026, because sterling is 92.5% silver. Per ordinary (kitchen-scale) ounce it is $51.32: a troy ounce is about 10% heavier.

How much is sterling silverware worth?

Weigh the sterling pieces on a kitchen scale. At the 29 September 2026 price each pound held about $821.04 of silver, so a 3 pound set held about $2,463.12. A buyer pays below that, and a known maker or pattern can be worth more as tableware than as metal; neither is measured here.

How much is sterling silver worth per gram?

$1.81 per gram on 29 September 2026: the silver price per troy ounce, times 0.925, divided by 31.1 grams.

What does 925 on silver mean?

That the metal is 925 parts silver per thousand, the sterling standard. Under US law a piece marked sterling may assay up to 4 parts per thousand below that, or up to 10 parts below when the solder is tested with it.

Is silver-plated flatware worth anything for the silver?

Not by weight. Plated ware is base metal with a silver coating, so the weight-times-silver-price arithmetic on this page does not apply to it, and under FTC rules it must be described as only coated. Its value is as tableware; we did not measure it.

How do I tell sterling from silver plate?

Look for the mark. Under the FTC’s jewelry guides only metal that is at least 925 parts per thousand silver may be called “sterling”, “sterling silver”, “ster.” or “solid silver”, and “coin silver” must be at least 900. The word “silver” alone needs a fineness number in front of it, such as “800 silver”, and plated pieces must say they are coated.
