How much is 14k gold worth? Price per gram by karat, and what the stamp promises
A piece of gold jewellery is worth, at the least, the pure gold inside it. That takes three numbers: the weight, the karat and the gold price. This page gives the value per gram and per pennyweight for every common karat, what pieces of a given weight hold, and how much gold a karat stamp is legally allowed to be short.

Gold value calculator by karat
Weigh the piece, without stones, in grams or pennyweights if you can. A kitchen scale reads ordinary ounces, which the calculator converts.
Melt value of the gold only. A buyer pays below it, and a jeweller charges well above it for the work and the stones.

Karat over 24 is the share of gold by weight; 24 karat is taken as 99.9%. A pennyweight is 1.555 g, one twentieth of a troy ounce, a unit still used in the US jewellery and scrap trade.
What a ring or chain of a given weight holds
Jewellery is priced by weight, so the useful table is weight by karat. These are example weights, not typical ones: put your own piece on a scale.

What a 14k stamp legally promises
14 karat means 583.3 parts gold per thousand. US law does not require exactly that. Under the National Gold and Silver Stamping Act (15 U.S.C. § 295), a gold article may assay up to 3 parts per thousand below its mark, or up to 7 parts below when the solder is tested with it (3 for watchcases and flatware). The FTC’s jewelry guides apply the same tolerances. On a soldered piece that is up to 1.2% less gold than the stamp suggests for 14k, and 1.7% for 10k: a gram of 14k at the legal floor held $77.15 of gold on 29 September 2026, not $78.08. Small, but it is why a buyer tests the metal rather than trusting the stamp.

The value moves with the gold price every trading day. Over the last 252 London prices the typical day moved a gram of 14k by about $0.78 and 1 day in 20 by $2.46 or more; on a 20 g chain that is $15.60 and $49.20. Across every one-year stretch since 1971, gold lost 10% or more 16.3% of the time. The full record is in gold price history.
Before you sell
- Know the number first. Weigh the piece in grams, find the karat stamp, and work out the gold value with the table or calculator. A buyer’s offer can then be read as a percentage of it.
- Ask for a price per gram or per pennyweight at your karat, not a lump sum, and get it from two or three buyers. We did not measure what buyers pay.
- Separate stones and non-gold parts. They add weight but no gold; a buyer will deduct them.
- Count the tax. The IRS treats gold as a collectible: a gain on gold held for more than a year is taxed at up to 28%.
